A Meaningful Life (article)

A young black woman sits on a gray sofa in a modern living room. She appears peaceful and stress-free while relaxing at home.

The definition of living a meaningful life will differ for each person.

To some it may be to strive for a form of greatness. To others it may be to make it through each day.

To one it may be a life of selfless service to others. Another may endeavor to attain a form of wealth for self.

One may decide that in order to give meaning to their life they must succeed. To someone else the act of existing may be all it takes.

Many will take this message and decide that they must be of lasting benefit to society. While others will focus their efforts on making a difference in the life of one specific person.

Some will seek enjoyment, while others challenge.

Whatever you choose to do with your life, it is yours to live.

How you define meaning is up to you. Do not let anyone else define it for you. Be the most honest version of you. Just do you, whatever that means.

But know this, suffering is not always to be leaned into or embraced. Sometimes suffering can be avoided. Sometimes we remain in suffering longer than we should. If you are suffering at the hands of another, leave. Leave now. Do not look back.

If you are suffering because someone else made you feel it was spiritual or beneficial to do so, look closely at their reasoning. Decide if it is truly bearing fruit in your life or the lives of others. If not, or if the pain is not worthy of the outcome, stop. Find another way. Practice self care.

Live a life of kindness and compassion for others but also for yourself.

Sometimes a life of meaning is difficult, other times it is joyous.

Sometimes life itself is difficult, other times it is joyous.

Do not look at another’s suffering and call it meaning. Do not cause yourself to suffer in vain and consider it necessary.

If possible walk away from suffering. Do not always lean in. Be discerning regarding what pain you endure, what hardships you take on.

If you have shown kindness to one person your life has meaning, even if that person was you.

Life is life. It is beautiful and it is ugly. It has times of struggle and rest, deep sorrow and elation. As best you are able, choose yours and live it.

…and when you feel the need, change course.
