Under the Surface (a poem)

The hidden underside of a large glacier is visible through the turquoise waters of Antarctica.

Wearing my mask,
you see what I let you.
Only showing
what is acceptable.
I hold back the pain,
pretend it’s all roses.
Never let you see
what’s under the surface.

Would you accept me,
if I were to show you,
all of my struggles,
the things I have hidden?
Removing the mask,
exposing the truth.
Showing the me,
that’s under the surface.

Now I see clearly
it’s how we all live.
We hold it all in,
appeasing the other.
Meanwhile, our hearts
are drowning within us.
It’s time we let go
of what’s under the surface.

Freedom is found,
where honesty reigns.
No longer lying,
nor deceiving myself.
With truth comes healing,
and true acceptance,
of the person you are,
under the surface.
