This started out as advice for another artist, who had a moment of doubt, having left her full-time job. What it became is advice for me, as someone who tends to become overwhelmed by personal projects with no clear guide rails already in place.
It’s easy to let fear stop us from achieving our dreams. Trust me, I’ve been there.
Something that can be helpful is to set attainable goals and make a Task List.
Discipline and focus are key. When I get scared, I tend to doubt myself, get distracted by indecision, and freeze up.
Keeping a regular schedule can be difficult but separating our time and focus between the “administrative” job, where we create the Task List, and the “production” job, where the Task List is our boss, can help keep us focused. It becomes easier to stay motivated and keep moving forward each day if we have clearly defined goals that we can achieve.
We don’t have to do everything all at once. If we try, it can become overwhelming very quickly.
If certain tasks seem daunting, break them down into manageable tasks. If necessary, break those down too.
Try not to get lost in the minutiae. Work towards balance.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. This is going to be a learning experience, and we may not have the experience, knowledge, or capabilities to be able to do every task well. It is okay to job out certain tasks.
Keep learning all that you can. Even if you don’t intend to do those tasks yourself, your knowledge will help you to better manage those who do. You don’t have to be an expert in every aspect of your business. Again, balance is key. Learn what you need to in order to complete the next task.
I know the world is a scary place right now. I will not sugar coat that fact. I also understand that my art may not be for everyone, but there are people out there who will benefit from it. It may make their day better just by seeing it, reading it, listening to it, using it, or just knowing it’s there. Your art may make them smile each time they look at it, or do its job then fade into the background; having helped them finish a project, feel confident on a date, gain new perspective, or navigate a difficult situation.
The thing is, we don’t have to sell our art to everyone, in order to be successful. We simply have to find, and speak to, our people; the niche group who appreciate what we have to offer them.
Don’t worry so much. Just get up each day and do the work.
You’re talented, you’ve done this for major companies. It’s time to do it for yourself.
You’re smart.
You’re capable.
You’ve got this.
