One Such Life (a poem)

Sunlight illuminates a group of twisting trees that form a canopy above a paved path. The Dark Hedges, Northern Ireland.

Each moment,
although a mere fraction of time,
contains a lifetime lived.

In the twisting, I find comfort
as I pass among the statuesque figures
who create a finely knit tunnel
of shaded green.

From beyond their reach,
long white streams of light stretch through
as if to grasp me from their midst.

Then, in a breath,
passionate beauty gives way
to the gift of illumination.

Swept away,
I leave the embrace of what was.
I begin anew.
