Candles (a poem)

People holding lit candles in a night scene.

Some they hold their candles
high for all to see.
All the while shouting,
“You need to be like me!”
Others, out of fear,
don’t share their light at all.
Neither understanding
the true nature of the call.

While standing ‘neath the steeple,
it’s easier to shine.
But when we walk outside the doors,
do we ever take the time,
to reach out to our neighbors,
with the light that guides the way?
Or do we choose to snuff it out,
with nothing left to say?

It’s not our job to point out,
the shadows in their lives.
We are called to shine the light,
wherever we arrive.
His light exposes darkness,
it’s what it does the best.
And they will see the difference,
when life becomes a test.

So my friend, don’t be afraid,
to shine in wind and rain.
‘Cause it’s there that you may find
the person who’s in pain.
The fear your light may dwindle,
flicker, and go out,
if you’re ever challenged,
just means that you have doubt.

So remember who light comes from,
and that it is not yours.
Then you’ll see it burning,
as you walk out through the doors.
At first your faith may waver,
though your candle’s burning bright.
but over time your faith will grow,
as you venture through the night.
