Miss Understanding (a poem)

Two ladies, with coffee cups in front of them, sit beside each other at a wooden table on an outdoor patio. Each is looking away, seemingly to avoid a difficult situation or a troubling conversation. Their body language suggests that they are experiencing a communication problem after having a personal conflict.

I try to be Miss Understanding,
to give the benefit of the doubt.
I search for what I am missing,
the topics to learn more about.

Am I the one with the blind spot?
Am I the one missing the point?
Is it really your fault
that this has me all out of joint?

Sometimes, it feels quite personal,
an attack directed at me.
Maybe you didn’t know how it felt.
Maybe you just couldn’t see.

With distance comes perspective,
as my words sear into my heart.
Maybe you were Miss Understanding, too,
and I wasn’t doing my part.
