To all of us people, of a certain age…
Remember the artist, band, writer, poet, actor, or comedian who touched your heart, brightened your day, helped you through a rough patch, altered your view of the world or how you saw yourself? Remember that artist who affected you so much that it changed your life?
Where are they now? Is their art still a part of your life?
Are they still making art, even if it’s in a different medium?
Have you checked in on them lately? If not, why not?
I realize that sometimes we outgrow certain kinds of artistic expression, that we move on. I understand that our tastes change and artists change too; sometimes in ways we weren’t expecting.
Now, might be a good time to check in on them, see what they’ve been up to.
Yes, you may find that your values and theirs no longer align. We are people, many of us change throughout our lives, and many do not. The thing is, they are people, and people need to be reminded, once in a while, that they matter. What they did mattered to you when you needed it most; in both big and small ways. They need to know that what they are doing matters.
You may find that some of your favorite artists from the past are more accessible now, they may have a fundraiser going on, or have new work for you to enjoy. Some artists value and need their space, they may need to set healthy boundaries as an act of self-care. Please respect them and their right to privacy and normalcy. If they do give of their time, be appreciative. When they need a break or have to step back, honor that need and be thankful for the time they gave.
If the artist is still creating, whether they are accessible or not, you can send them a clear message that what they have done for you in the past, and what they are doing now, matters, by buying their stuff, sharing what you’ve found with those in your sphere of influence. Help them find a new audience and gain new fans.
It’s the best way to pay them back for what they did to make your day a little brighter, your life a little better, and you a little more… well, YOU.
