Prevailing winds
wrapped the flag
tightly around its pole.
All that could be discerned
were the stripes;
set in strong opposition
against one another,
sharp lines having been drawn
between them.
Not a star was visible,
nor was the blue of the sky discernible
within its folds.
Only the conflicting colors remained,
for the winds would not relent.
