The Deal (a poem)
I see myself in the story of a beautifully unique woman who never quite fits the mold of societal expectations, and the beast who holds her captive within the near impeneterable walls of an enchanted castle.
I see myself in the story of a beautifully unique woman who never quite fits the mold of societal expectations, and the beast who holds her captive within the near impeneterable walls of an enchanted castle.
When we marginalize someone, we marginalize everyone like them, and in doing so, create hardships for others who do not fit perceived standards and, in some cases, negatively affect even those who do.

For all my life I tried my best to meet your expectations, to fit into your world, to be loved.
Surrounded by people, blind to the tension. This patchwork relationship, this marriage of convenience, is falling apart.
Just when I think I’m at a point where I’m okay and can finally start moving forward, someone casually or incendiarily hurls those three words, burning me to the core.
We have all known the narcissistic bully on the playground. For those of us who have lived long enough to see how those stories pan out, we have seen the pain, fear, and self-doubt that many of those bullies were dealing with under the surface.
