Watching you breathe (a poem)

Profile of a woman in a long white dress, sitting on the beach at sunset, feet in the sand, with her head down, grieving a loss.

(TW: Death)

It’s quiet,
except for nurses
in the hallway.

Your body
rises and falls
with every breath.

We sit
beside your bed
waiting for change.

We hope
healing will come
as you rest.

We pray,
in our helplessness,
for your comfort.

I’ve learned
time is relative
and quite valuable.

Once spent
it is retrievable
only in memories.

It’s late,
so we sit
watching you breathe.
